Best Guide to Eyelash Extensions: 71 Tips To Know Before You Get Yours!
The Best Guide to Eyelash Extensions
Eyelash extensions are definitely having a moment in the fashion world right now. They are the ultimate low-maintenance luxury; with one initial appointment you can wake up each day with gorgeous, appealing and beautiful eyes! If you’ve been considering diving into the trend but have questions about how this all works, keep reading. We’ve got all the answers!
71 Tips To Know Before You Get Eyelash Extensions
What Are Eyelash Extensions?
Eyelash extensions are used to enhance the natural fullness, length, and shape of your own natural eyelashes. They are semi-permanent extensions that are generally applied one-by-one with a long-lasting adhesive and will be made from mink, silk, or synthetic materials.
Extensions are a wonderful way to get the appearance of full, long, dark lashes without having to go through the every day trouble of applying mascara or falsies (temporary eyelashes).
How Can You Prep For Eyelash Extensions Before You Get Them?
There are a few different steps you should follow in order for your eyelash extensions to be applied smoothly and to last as long as possible.
First, avoid eye makeup until after your appointment; any residual oil or makeup will keep the extensions from bonding properly.
You should avoid using mascara or falsies for three or four days before your appointment (especially if you use waterproof mascara). This ensures that there is no makeup still clinging to your natural lashes.
Eye shadow and eyeliner are fine to use until the day before your appointment as they are easier to clean off.
Second, try to avoid having any oil-based products around your eyes. This includes oil-based eye creams and makeup removers. Oil is the worst thing to have around the extension adhesive!
Third, take a shower ahead of time. Eyelash extensions use an adhesive to affix to your natural lashes, and it needs to set over a period of 24-48 hours after application. That means no exposure to excess moisture, heat, or humidity. So showers, saunas, swimming, etc. are all out for the 24-48 hours following application.
It’s also a good idea to swap contacts for glasses during the 24 hours after your application because contact solution can also cause your extension adhesive to fail.
What Do You Do In The First 24-48 Hours After Getting Eyelash Extensions?
The most important thing you can do to take care of your extensions is to avoid any excess moisture or heat for the first 24 hours. If you can stand to wait 48 hours before showering or hitting up a hot yoga class, then even better.
It’s a good idea to ditch the oil-based makeup and skincare products in general if you can, as oil can damage the adhesive in your lashes even after the initial 48 hours. Waterproof mascara will also be a no-go, but it’s not like you’ll be needing it once you have your rockin’ new extensions.
Also, if possible, try to sleep on your back so that you aren’t rubbing your face into your pillow at night. The increased friction could loosen or pull your eyelash extensions out.
How Do You Care For Eyelash Extensions After Getting Them?
You don’t need to relearn how to live your entire life after getting extensions. However, there are a few changes you might have to make if you want your lashes to last as long as possible.
Aside from the immediate aftercare (the first 24-48 hours), you should do your best to minimize the amount of friction you apply on your eyes. Rubbing your face too aggressively with a towel or sleeping on your stomach (and thereby keeping your face buried in a pillow) will definitely contribute to premature eyelash loss.
You should also do your best to eliminate oil-based makeup and skincare products from your routine. Oil-based products will break down the adhesive used to keep your eyelash extensions attached to your natural lashes.
Can You Swim, Shower, Or Exercise With Eyelash Extensions?
Short answer: Yes! You can swim, shower, and exercise with your eyelash extensions…24-48 hours AFTER they’ve been applied. That’s why eyelash extensions are so great! No matter what you do, you look great with your extensions…as long as you take care of them.
For the first couple of days, avoid applying any excess moisture to your eye area. The adhesive used to attach your eyelash extensions to your natural lashes needs 24-48 hours to fully cure.
What Are The 10 Key Benefits Of Eyelash Extensions?
1. You can ditch the mascara! Eyelash extensions are meant to achieve that full, long, dark, fabulous look without the aid of any additional cosmetics. You look glamorous from the moment you wake up!
2. You can get lashes that are tailored to the look & style that works best for you.
3. Eyelash extensions will frame your eyes, drawing attention to your gorgeous peepers without you having to rely on makeup.
4. Eyelash extensions are natural and lightweight, so your eyes aren’t irritated by makeup products or the temporary glue used with falsies.
5. Depending on your preference, extensions can look natural or can look fun, stylized, and glamorous.
6. You don’t have to deal with the frustrations of clumpy glue or mascara. Your lashes will always look immaculate!
7. Unlike false eyelash strips that you buy at the grocery store, there’s no risk of your extensions coming loose in the middle of your day; you’ll still look fabulous even at the gym!
8. Sweat, tears, swimming, running, exercising, the sauna, sleep… you can weather these all without fear of loosening your extensions. Eyelash extensions also mean that you don’t have to worry about black mascara running down your face or turning you into a raccoon. Ain’t nobody got time for that!
9. You’ll save time on your daily routine! Your eyes look amazing when you wake from sleeping – no effort required.
10. Eyelash extensions frame your eyes and help create the appearance of a more even, proportional shape.

Are There Different Extension Colors?
Absolutely! Luxury eyelash creators create eyelash extensions in just about every color you can imagine. It’s best to check with your eyelash artist first to make sure they carry the color(s) you want in stock. If they don’t, they can always place an order for you!
Which Style Of Eyelash Extensions Is Right For You?
Ultimately, this is a discussion you want to have with your eyelash artist. Just like hairstyles, tattoos, piercings, etc., your sense of style is very personal to you. Your eyelash artist will know the best way to help your vision become reality. However, here are four quick tips to help you get started.
1. If you’re looking for the most natural look possible, then you want lashes that are more of a matte property. That means these eyelash extensions don’t have the overly, unnatural mirror and shine properties of a gloss finish.
2. Mink extensions are the best at matching the look of our natural lashes.
3. For a more glam, dramatic look, you should consider opting for silk lashes.
4. Lashes made of synthetic fabrics can be ordered in a variety of colors if you really want your look to pop.
What Are The Best Extension Styles For Your Eye Shape?
If your eyes are Almond-shaped
Almond-shaped eyes are about twice as long as they are tall, making them one of the most proportionate shapes. With that being the case, they can rock just about any style for eyelash extensions!
If your eyes are Hooded/Monolid
Hooded or monolid eyes are eye shapes without a crease. Hooded lids often appear to swallow up the eyelash line underneath, so extensions that have a flat base and a sharp curl—like the L and L+ eyelash styles—will work best to help open your eyes up.
Make sure to request that the longest lashes are placed at the mid-outer eye for the best effect.
If your eyes are Round-shaped
Round eyes are already very open, so emphasizing that aspect can often make a person seem constantly surprised. To avoid this with eyelash extensions, you should be using an extension style that has a shorter length and a less dramatic curl (i.e. a B curl).
As with hooded eyes, the longest lashes should be placed along the mid-outer eye. This will help round eyes seem more almond-shaped and proportional, and avoid that wide-eyed surprised look.
If your eyes are Deep-set
If you have eyes that rest farther back in your face, then you want to avoid any eyelash extensions that are overly curly; this will make your eyelash extensions look obviously fake. Instead, opt for a straighter eyelash (like a longer J curl) to help make your eyes appear more open and alert.
If your eyes are Downturned
Downturned eyes are tilted downwards at the outer edges. The best eyelash extension style for downturned eyes is a classic cat-eye, where the longest lashes are placed at the outer edges. The extra volume at the outer edges will help lift your eyes and make them seem straighter/more even.
Can You Use Makeup After You Get Eyelash Extensions?
Most lash pros will recommend that you avoid eye makeup for the first 24-48 hours after getting eyelash extensions so that the adhesive has time to cure. After that, feel free to use eye makeup to your heart’s content!
In order to maximize the life of your lashes, you should opt for liquid eyeliners instead of waxy pencils (wax might damage the adhesive). Oil-based creams or skin products should be out as well.
And you won’t need to use mascara with extensions. If you really want to add some, make sure to only apply mascara to the tips of your lashes; stay well away from the base.
Should You Use Mascara After You Get Extensions?
Eyelash extensions are already doing mascara’s job (that is, making your lashes appear darker, fuller, and longer), so you won’t need any mascara. But if you really miss your mascara, then just be sure to avoid using any within the first 24-48 hours, and only apply it on the tips of your lashes. Applying mascara near the base could damage the adhesive and may cause your eyelashes to fall out when you’re trying to clean the makeup off later.
How Long Will Eyelash Extensions Last and What Should You Do To Keep Them Looking Fabulous?
Extensions are adhered to your lashes, not your skin, so they will last throughout the length of your natural eyelash cycle (the rate at which your eyelashes grow and fall out on their own). So that is to say, about 6-8 weeks, max.
It is recommended that you get your lashes refilled every 2-3 weeks in order to keep them looking as fab as possible. To care for them in between refill appointments, do what you can to avoid oily and waxy makeup or skin care products around the eyes.
You should also avoid friction around your eyes as much as possible (i.e. no rubbing your face in a pillow or towel, no scratching at or rubbing your eyes, no sleeping on your face, etc.).

How About When You Sleep?
With extensions, it’s best if you can sleep on your back as much as possible. Sleeping on your stomach or side where your face is likely to be pressed against your pillow all night can cause creasing in your eyelash extensions, or can causes eyelash extensions to be pulled off due to the friction. Keep reading below to see what we say about using silk…
3 Things You Definitely Should NOT Do Once You Have Eyelash Extensions
1. Use oil-based or waxy products near your eyes: Oils and waxy products will break down the adhesives used to glue your eyelash extensions to your lashes and will cause premature eyelash loss.
2. Use curlers: Most eyelash extensions are designed to already be curly. Using an eyelash curler can damage your extensions or even pull them away from your natural lashes. The one exception to this rule is mink eyelash extensions, which need to be constantly curled in order to maintain that shape.
3. Rub your eyes: Any friction around your eyes can cause premature eyelash loss. Be careful when towel-drying your face after a shower, and try to sleep on your back as much as possible.
How Do Extensions Feel Once You Have Them?
Unlike falsies, extensions feel very natural when wearing them. They are lightweight so your eyes won’t feel weighed down, and they are made of materials that mimic the natural texture of your own eyelashes. The biggest difference you’ll notice is that they are longer.
What Will Others Think About Your Looks After You Get Eyelash Extensions?
Short Answer: They’ll think you look fabulous every day! Friends will think you look younger. Some will think you’ve had some “work” done. Some will think you must be using Botox. Some will think you’ve got a new makeup pro. Some will be jealous. All will think you’re beautiful. Strangers may think you are ten years (or more) younger than you are!
Extensions are an awesome way to look effortlessly fabulous every day! Even with no makeup, your extensions will make your eyes appear more open, brighter, and more alert. Whether you opt for a more dramatic style or a natural look, people will be sure to notice. Be prepared to field tons of compliments about how great you look!
Basically, eyelash extensions are a great beauty hack! That’s why celebrity superstars (Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Kylie Jenner, Hilary Duff, Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley, Angelina Jolie, Melania Trump…) won’t be caught without them.

What Are Extensions Made Of?
Mink Eyelash Extensions
Mink is the most expensive material for eyelash extensions. (Beyoncé wears them!). Mink is popular for clients who are looking for an extremely natural look as these lashes most closely match our own lashes. They are also the lightest material, so they stay in place for longer. And unlike other materials, mink does not hold a curl permanently. So you’ll need to use curlers (carefully!) at home.
Fox Eyelash Extensions
Fox extensions are relatively new on the market. They have the same softness and natural look of the mink eyelash extensions, but their thickness is more similar to that of silk.
Sable Eyelash Extensions
Sable eyelash extensions are the thinnest available. They are lighter and softer than the mink extensions, which means that they should only be used if your natural eyelashes are very fine.
Faux-Mink Eyelash Extensions
Faux-mink extensions are the most popular with eyelash artists. They are man-made and designed to mimic the natural fur used in mink extensions. Customers and artists alike love this particular material because it is lighter and more natural looking, and is also capable of holding a permanent curl.
Faux-Fox Eyelash Extensions
Faux-fox eyelash extensions mimic the natural texture of the fox eyelash extensions, but are more easily able to hold a permanent curl.
Silk Eyelash Extensions
Silk eyelash extensions are lightweight and more flexible than synthetic options. Silk lashes come in a variety of lengths and shapes, and can hold a curl permanently. However, silk lashes do tend to be the least comfortable type of extension as they are the thickest; they are ordinarily used only for special occasions.
Synthetic Eyelash Extensions
Synthetic extensions are made from an acrylic material that is thick and glossy. When applied thickly to your natural lashes, synthetic extensions can create an extremely dramatic look. They hold a permanent curl extremely well due to their firmness. However, their firmness and weight cause synthetic eyelash extensions to lack the staying power of mink or silk.

What Are “Volume” Extensions?
Volume lashes are a new technique that is designed to provide as much volume/ lift to your lashes as possible. This technique uses strictly mink or silk extensions. Multiple extensions are applied to each natural eyelash in order to create the fullest look possible.
What Are “Classic” Eyelash Extensions?
Classic eyelash extensions are done in a style that mimics natural eyelash growth so that your eyelashes seem longer and fuller without looking artificial.
How To Protect Your Extensions If You Toss & Turn While You Sleep?
Go out and get yourself a silk pillowcase right now!
A silk pillowcase will do the same things for your natural lashes and eyelash extensions that it does for the hair on your head. That is, it will lessen the damage to your hair, eyelashes, and extensions while you sleep.
The natural (smooth, gentle, not very absorbent) properties of silk helps reduce the friction on your hair that is caused by tossing and turning at night. Silk, unlike super-absorbent cotton, helps your skin and hair retain their moisture.
BoomZip Pro Tip: Silk pillow cases also help reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, blemishes, and dry skin.
Should You Take A Break From Your Eyelash Extensions?
There’s no need to stop wearing extensions. Remember, your natural lashes have a growth cycle of 6-8 weeks. That means that each of your natural lashes shed (or fall out) every 6-8 weeks as part of normal growth.
And, because “new” natural eyelashes are constantly growing in to replace those that are shedding, it’s recommended that you get “refills” of your extensions every 2-3 weeks so that your look is always full and fabulous.
Will Extensions Damage Your Natural Lashes?
No. Properly applied eyelash extensions do not damage your natural lashes or make them shed more quickly. That’s why extensions are worn by millions of women across the country.
- Extensions are safe and do not ruin the health of your natural lashes.
- Your natural lashes follow a growth and shedding cycle, like all the hairs on your body.
What Is The Best Way To Get Your Eyelash Extensions?

- In the comfort and convenience of your home or office with one of BoomZip’s Eyelash Pros.
