It’s Time For Straight Talk. Here Are 8 Ways To Give Yourself The Best Chance To Prevent Breast Cancer
I’m a dad. I’ve got daughters. They asked me if there were ways to prevent breast cancer. Here’s what I found and shared with them. Perhaps it will have value in your life.
Women have mixed feelings when it comes to their breasts. Yet no matter how they feel about their breasts, most women fear breast cancer. This ingrained fear may have something to do with the fact that there are often no physical symptoms of breast cancer and it can strike at any age – even after menopause.
There’s no one cause (or one cure) for breast cancer. However, there are a number of factors that can put a woman at risk for this disease. Luckily, there are things that women can do to reduce the risks of developing breast cancer. Here is the unvarnished truth based on available research.
Prevent Breast Cancer Step #1: Check Your Family’s Medical History
This is less of a preventative measure, but it can give you a clue as to whether or not you’re at risk. Knowing whether your family has a history of cancer and tumors will help you determine how often you should get yourself screened.
Early detection is key to a positive outcome for any cancer.
Prevent Breast Cancer Step #2: Find Out About Your Breast Density
You’ve heard about mass, but your breasts can be dense too.
Breast density refers to the ratio of fat to tissue in your breasts. This ratio is highly crucial for effective screening of breast cancer. It affects the chances of the cancer being detected on a mammogram. This is due to the fact that cancer and muscle tissue have a similar white color on a mammogram, while fat is shown as a dark shade.
Breast density decreases with age. Younger breasts have more muscle tissue. If your breasts maintain high density as you age, opt for digital mammograms. These make it easier to track changes in breast tissue.
Prevent Breast Cancer Step #3: Maintain Healthy Body Weight
Large amounts of fat tissue in the body put women at risk for breast cancer. This applies mostly to women who are over-weight and post-menopausal. Estrogen mostly comes from fat tissue after menopause.
More fatty tissue equals higher levels of estrogen that can increase the risk of developing breast cancer. As for overweight people, they also tend to have higher insulin levels, which have been found to correlate with breast cancer.
It may be helpful to get the advice of a dietitian so that your food choices support your health goals.
Prevent Breast Cancer Step #4: Increase Physical Activity
Increasing physical activity by exercising daily for as little as half an hour is a healthy habit not just for your breasts, but for your overall well-being. The correlation between the two is that exercising allows women to maintain a healthy weight, which helps keeps the breast cancer symptoms at bay.
It may be helpful to get a personal fitness trainer to help you get on the right path towards increased fitness and strength.
Prevent Breast Cancer Step #5: Go Easy On Alcoholic Drinks
Studies on the link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer show that women who consume more than one alcoholic beverage per day have a 20% higher breast cancer risk than those who limit themselves to one drink per day.
Limiting your alcohol intake can also prevent other kinds of health risks too.

Prevent Breast Cancer Step #6: Lessen Exposure To Chemicals
A variety of chemicals are identified as breast cancer carcinogens that can dramatically increase your risk for breast cancer. Although many women use these products on a regular basis – like detergent and cleaning products – women who know they are at risk for breast cancer due to genetics should limit their exposure.
Other chemicals that are linked to breast cancer tissue growth include cigarette smoke and parabens. Parabens are found in a variety of cleansers, deodorants, and moisturizers. These should be avoided to help lessen the risk of developing breast cancer.
Prevent Breast Cancer Step #7: Reduce Use Of Birth Control Pills
This is particularly important for women who are 40 years old or older, when the risk for breast cancer is higher. Birth control pills slightly increase the risk of getting breast cancer, although it subsides once a woman stops taking oral contraceptives.
Birth control pills and smoking are a deadly combination that increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and breast cancer.
Prevent Breast Cancer Step #8: Reduce Hormone Therapy After Menopause
Many women face a variety of troubling symptoms post-menopause, which include night sweats and hot flashes. This leads to them opting for hormone replacement therapy to reduce such stressful symptoms.
However, research shows that post-menopausal women that take hormones such as estrogen and progestin become more likely to develop breast cancer. The probability of developing breast cancer decreases to a normal risk level five years after treatment ends.
So…
Knowing what contributes to the risk for developing breast cancer can help save your life and the lives of those you love. By implementing preventative measures, women can enjoy their lives knowing that they’ve done all that they can to avoid this deadly disease.
