Here’s How Your Kid Can Get Into A Top College!
This important message is going out from Top College Admissions Prep founder Darryl L. Mobley to the parents of high schoolers and to the 37 graduating students (and their parents) referenced below.
I worked with 37 seniors (the year I wrote this letter) in preparation for their college applications. (My “Top College Admissions Prep” program.) I’ve actually worked with some of these now 16, 17 & 18-year olds for 18 months, some for three years, and so forth. They live all over the country. As I write this, all of the Early Admissions results are in from top colleges for the kids I coached. (*Go to the bottom of this page to see results from most recent students I worked with.)

Of the 37 seniors (to include one of my own kids), all 37 got accepted (“Early Decision” or “Early Action“) into the number 1 school on their list. The top schools they gained Early Decision (or Early Action) acceptance to included Duke, Dartmouth, Princeton, Yale, MIT, Harvard, Cornell, West Point, Stanford, Chicago, Brown, Williams, Columbia, USC, Swarthmore, Northwestern, Rice, Georgetown, Pennsylvania, Amherst, Cal Berkeley, Wellesley, Bowdoin, Notre Dame, Cal Tech, Tufts, Carnegie Mellon, Wesleyan and Johns Hopkins. (This is an unmatched success rate at gaining Early acceptance at the most competitive colleges. By the way — there is nothing wrong with a student getting into his/her number 2, 3 or 4 school. Sometimes they are better fits.)
The “personalized plan” Coach Mobley develops with each student covers developing his/her specialty (area(s) that most matter to college admissions officers), understanding the grind it will take to gain admittance to a great college, high school academics, standardized tests (which to take and how to improve scores), extracurricular activities, summer projects, how to get the best recommendations from teachers, how to get someone inside the college to “pull you in,” what should be done each year of high school, and how to write persuasive essays. Coach Mobley “meets” regularly with the student in person, by phone, by Skype or via email. As one of the nation’s top life coaches, Coach Mobley makes sure the kids he works with are positioned so that they stand out, develop their unique advantage, plan ahead and enjoy the process. I enjoyed working with each of these students as they took on the challenge of maximizing the outcome of their pre-college schooling (which is always my goal for the kids I coach). In the two years prior to this year, I had 34 of 39 and 21 of 28 students get their top choice. I’ve been doing this long enough to assure you that these results are not luck. By way of example, there is a very good high school in my city that had only one of the top 25 students in their senior class get accepted Early or Regular Decision at a top tier college this year. I coached that one student. (The student I coached was not in the top 20.) The other 24 students were rejected from their top choices.
It is extremely competitive to get into these top schools. But, it can be done. I did not do the work. All credit goes to my 37 student-clients and their parents. I coach the students (help them put together the right plan and activities) to do the things that will most likely maximize the outcome, based on what they have done and plan to do while in high school. That’s called following “their personalized plan.” I tell every student I coach to “follow the plan” so that they are seen as unique & desirable by college admissions officers compared to the 20-30 thousand other applicants.
No student is perfect. And…they are teenagers! As such, many needed regular encouragement (kicks in the butt) from me to maintain their best effort and focus. (Easy for me to do. I don’t have to live with the kids after I’ve kicked them in the butt.) That said, all 37 of these students followed their individual plan. Now – they get to move to the next level of education with the wind at their backs (as well as the funding by their parents!). Congrats to the parents and their fortunate 37 kids.

Time for brutal honesty
The 37 graduating students I coached this year are talented. However, do NOT believe (as most parents & students do) that all it takes to get into top schools are high grades, a list of school activities, and a helpful school counselor. That’s not nearly enough. It is far trickier than that. The hard truth is that there are many kids who DON’T gain entrance into top schools who are at least as talented as the 37 kids I coached.
For those of you who have kids who are now high school juniors, sophomores or freshmen — I encourage you to get serious, get a plan, and get busy…right now if not sooner. It’s about more than grades and there is a dramatic difference in outcome between going forward with a plan and going forward with wishful thinking.
About the cost of these elite schools
Whatever your specific school goals for your child, I advise maximizing his/her high school years so that they get the best college for the least outflow of money. In other words, your kid can be in a position to pay less college tuition if s/he is a highly regarded applicant. Imagine paying less than $20k to have your kid at one of these top schools. (Yes! It happens!) Did you know that top schools often charge far less tuition than state schools (because they want to make sure that they attract the very best students)? I share all the important information with the parents of the kids I coach.
How much will it be worth to your child’s life to gain entry into a top college?
College is not a four-year decision. The college your child chooses is a 40-year decision. Generally, the more challenging the college that your child enters, the better for them in the long run. To quote a college dean: “Students who elect to come to our university are choosing 4 challenging years followed by 40 easier years as compared to if they choose a less challenging college where they would have 4 easier years followed by 40 more difficult years.”
I’d like to coach your kid
I have 12 openings left this year for my “Top College Admissions Prep” coaching. Am I affordable? Yes. Your kid does not need to live near me to get my coaching. Please contact me only if your child is in 11th, 10th or 9th grade. It’s never too early to start. Your commitment is all that’s needed.
Know this – I want your child to have the best college options possible. That’s my focus. Long is the list of parents who came to me too late and told me that they let their child handle all of the college application process. (How do I say this gently? That’s not the smartest move a parent can make. Most teenagers can’t even remember to clean their rooms. Given this, why would you trust your teen to make all the important moves – alone – during what is the first big decision process of their lives?
The college choice tends to determine your kid’s short- and long-term income potential, network and job opportunities. Alma mater matters!) High school students don’t know what they don’t know. And, at the age of 16, 17 or 18 – there is a lot that a teenager – no matter how smart and accomplished – won’t know that will trip them up during the ultra competitive college application process. As parents, part of our job is to help shift the odds in favor of our kids while we can, if we can. One way to do this is to provide appropriate guidance to them during the college application process.

** Most recent class results: 32 of 33 seniors were accepted early decision at their first choice school. Each school can be found on the “Forbes Top Colleges” top 25. The one holdout senior did not apply early decision. As a result, we are waiting for regular decision announcements to be made. I am very happy for these kids and their families.
