CHAPTER 1
About Deep Conditioning
What is Deep Conditioning?
Deep Conditioning is a way of treating your hair that strengthens and restores moisture to the hair strands. This happens through the use of specialized products with specific hair nutrients. Think of it as drinking protein shakes to provide your body with additional protein. Or, think of it as taking vitamins to fortify your body and enhance your health.
Deep Conditioners work in a similar way to provide beneficial nutrients to your hair for healthy growth and maintenance.
You should know that Deep Conditioner treatments are all about the cuticle. That’s right—your hair has cuticles, just like your nails. The cuticle is the outer part of your hair. It protects your hair and helps prevent breakage.
Your hair experiences a lot of daily stressors (including use of too-hot water, excessive styling heat, color & dye treatments, other harsh chemical treatments, the sun…) which do damage over time.
By damage, I mean that you suffer from hair that is dry, dull, brittle, full of split-ends, rough feeling, weakened, lifeless, frizzy, hard to manage & style, and an all-around bad hair scene. Conditioning enables your hair to withstand those stressors, and reverse or prevent damage.
Who you gonna call when your hair – and its cuticles – are under attack? Deep Conditioners!
Deep Conditioning treatments can reverse the wear and tear that your hair suffers. When you leave a warm, nutrient-rich conditioner on your locks for 20 to 30 minutes, you allow the moisture and vitamins to penetrate the cuticle and really get into the hair shaft for long-lasting results.
As a result, with regularly scheduled Deep Conditioning treatments, you’ll feel & see fantastic results.
How Long Does It Take To Deep Condition Hair?
Deep Conditioning your hair will take about 30-40 minutes in total. A single Conditioning treatment is left on only about 20-25 minutes. And you won’t want to let the treatment sit on your head for more than 30 minutes. This is because, according to The Natural Haven, your hair simply won’t absorb any more of the conditioner after 30 minutes.
So, you can easily do this treatment at home, use a specially designed hair therapy heat wrap like me. Or you could wrap your coated hair in a towel, and go about other tasks as the conditioner does its work.
It takes about 5 minutes to apply the Conditioning treatment to your hair. May take more or less depending on the length and volume of your hair. And it will take an additional 2 – 3 minutes to thoroughly rinse it out. Therefore, this makes for roughly a half hour in total.

CHAPTER 2
Here Are The Best Benefits You Get When You Deep Conditioning Your Hair
The 13 Best Benefits from Deep Conditioning Your Hair
Deep Conditioning benefits your hair – and how you feel about your hair – in so many ways.
If your hair tends to be dry, frizzy, or unmanageable, you would benefit from deep conditioning hair treatments.
Perhaps you regularly use a curling iron or hairdryer, use hair coloring or other chemicals on your hair, chemically relax your hair, or find yourself out in the sun or chlorine treated water. All those things can damage your hair and strip away its natural shine, moisture, softness, and bounce.
The good news is that a deep conditioning treatment can help restore your hair and improve its appearance.
About Your Hair
Each strand of your hair has three layers. Those layers are the (inner-most) medulla, the (middle-layer) cortex, and the cuticle.
The cuticle is the outer layer of hair that serves as the protective barrier to the cortex. The cuticle is a bunch of scales that overlap, like the shingles on a roof. This is the layer that you can see and that reflects the overall health of your hair. When this cuticle is damaged, the scales don’t lie flat against each other and your hair looks frizzy, dry, and weakened hair.
The right deep conditioner will condition your cuticle and allow the scale-like cells to lie flat. Your hair will look healthier, feel softer, have more bounce, and be shinier.
Deep Conditioning On The Regular
Deep conditioning treatments should be part of your regular, healthy hair regimen. Why? Because you get all of this…

CHAPTER 3
Why Should You Deep Condition Your Hair?
How Will My Hair Look After I Deep Condition It?
Not only will your hair feel great; it will look amazing as well. Deep Conditioners – especially Coconut Oil – penetrate deep inside the cortex cuticles to give your hair the much-needed nutrients. This enables your hair shafts to loosen, and provides the hair with a natural shine. Deep Conditioning also helps protect your hair from the inside out.
Should I Get A Professional To Deep Condition My Hair?
A professional Deep Conditioning treatment will provide you with softer, shinier, and stronger hair. This is especially important if you color frequently, process, or otherwise heat-style your hair.
Many of us may not color-treat our hair, but it is nearly impossible to get by without heat-styling our hair at some point. Even your hair dryer’s heat can cause damage and breakage to your pretty locks.
A salon professional can provide you with the best Deep Conditioning treatment. They will have high-end conditioning products and proper tools. So, getting a professional to Deep Condition your hair is a very good thing.
Which Is Best—A Professional Deep
Conditioning My Hair Or Doing It Myself?
When it comes to routine hair care, you can easily do an effective Deep Conditioning treatment at home, on your own. However, if your hair is suffering from split ends, heat damage, uncontrolled frizz, or another problem, it’s can be a good idea to let a professional Deep Condition your hair.
Scheduling a Deep Conditioning treatment with a hair care professional allows for targeting your hair problems with specific vitamins, moisturizers, and ingredients that will give you the best results.
How Does Deep Conditioning Help
Women Suffering From Hair Loss?
Women suffering from hair loss can help to maintain the hair they have by Deep Conditioning on a regular schedule. Deep Conditioning won’t restore missing hair, but it will help to boost the overall health of existing locks. Additionally, Deep Conditioning treatments can help to prevent further breakage.
Is Deep Conditioning Hair Right For All Ethnicities?
Of course! Deep Conditioning treatments are designed to help any and all hair types achieve their healthiest and liveliest look. There are a wide variety of Deep Conditioning treatments out there, so you are going to want to make sure you find a treatment that is going to be right for your hair type.
For example, there are treatments designed for thin hair that feels brittle due to harsh winter air. There are also Deep Conditioning treatments for women of color who are experiencing dry hair. Most Deep Conditioners are specially formulated to help with very specific hair problems. (See our Recipes for Deep Conditioners in Chapter 10.)
The only women out there who should avoid Deep Conditioning treatments are those who already have naturally perfect, shiny, manageable, and bouncing beautiful hair. (Do these people exist?)
According to haircare authority Sayria Jade,
“You should Deep Condition your hair if you braid, twist, use heat on, use styling products on, use chemical treatments on, or use sulfate-based shampoos on – your hair!”
BoomZip agrees!
Can Deep Conditioning Help Regrow My Hair?
How? Which Type of Deep Conditioner?
Deep Conditioning alone will not restore 100% of hair loss. However, it can help you re-grow your hair by strengthening your roots and boosting your hair’s health with essential vitamins and nutrients.
To fight hair loss, look for vitamin-rich Deep Conditioners that boast natural Oils such as Coconut, Argan, Avocado, Olive, or Jojoba Oil. See Chapter 6 (Best Deep Conditioners), Chapter 7 (Magical Deep Conditioning Oils), and Chapter 10 (Deep Conditioner Recipes)for the ingredients that help lessen hair loss and grow hair.
Can Deep Conditioning Help Thicken My Thinning Hair? How? Which Type of Deep Conditioner?
A Deep Conditioner cannot thicken your hair. But, a Deep Conditioner will add volume and a healthy glow to allow your hair to look thicker. See Chapter 10 for the Deep Conditioner Recipes that help thicken hair.
A common issue for women with thin hair is build-up. Build-up is created when we use low-quality products that are packed with fillers, or when we use too much product too frequently.
One way to create volume and thickness is by first using a clarifying shampoo to help rid your hair of the gunk weighing it down.
The first thing you will want to do is find (or make) a Deep Conditioner that is both light and packed with keratin proteins. These proteins help strengthen fine hair, which will make your locks look voluminous, thick, and shiny. (Read Chapter 5 in BoomZip’s Ultimate Guide to Deep Conditioning Your Hair for how often we suggest you Deep Condition thinning hair.)
Pro Tip: If you use too much Deep Conditioner, too often, it can create weigh your hair down, making it look flat and thin again.
But simply knowing why you should Deep Condition isn’t enough. The next step is to understand which types of hair benefit from Deep Conditioning. Say what?! And in the next chapter, you’ll get the exact information on every hair type.
TAKE ME TO CHAPTER TWO TAKE ME TO CHAPTER FOUR!
CHAPTER 4
What Types Of Hair Benefit From Deep Conditioning?
How Does Deep Conditioning Help Women With Fine Hair?
Women with fine hair find that Deep Conditioning on a regular schedule helps to add volume and shape to their hair. (See Chapter 5 for the Deep Conditioning schedule that is just right for your hair.) By restoring moisture, Deep Conditioners can be a huge help when it comes to adding body to a full head of hair.
How Does Deep Conditioning Help Women with Coarse Hair?
Coarse hair tends to be extremely dry and so some extra moisturizer will do your hair some good. Coarse hair needs a Deep Conditioner that features rich creams and Oils, and is very hydrating. Deep Conditioners that contain fatty alcohols like panthenol, stearyl alcohol or silicone are recommended.
After rinsing it off, you could always leave a little in your hair to smoothed and lighten your curls. The little bit that you leave in will act as an additional styling product to keep your hair moisturized all day long.
How Does Deep Conditioning Help Women With Curly Hair?
Women with curly hair benefit from Deep Conditioning on a regular schedule when it comes to overall curl maintenance. (See Chapter 5 for the Deep Conditioning schedule that is just right for your hair.)
Well-conditioned and moisturized curly hair means less frizz and a softer, silkier texture. Additionally, the curls will be easier to style and manage.
How Does Deep Conditioning Help Women With Dry, Brittle Hair?
Women with dry, brittle hair benefit from the moisturizing effects of Deep Conditioning on a regular schedule. (See Chapter 5 for the Deep Conditioning schedule that is just right for your hair.) The treatment restores moisture, strengthens each individual hair strand, and aids in the repair of dry, broken ends.
How Does Deep Conditioning Help Women With Damaged Hair?
You can repair your damaged hair by Deep Conditioning on a regular schedule. (See Chapter 5 for the Deep Conditioning schedule that is just right for your hair.) A Deep Conditioning treatment repairs damaged hair by filling in gaps along the hair shaft and boosting overall hair health for more successful future growth.
How Does Deep Conditioning Help Women With Limp, Lifeless Hair?
Women with limp, lifeless hair find that Deep Conditioning on a regular schedule adds long-term volume and shape to their hair in the way that no heated treatment ever could. (See Chapter 5 for the Deep Conditioning schedule that is just right for your hair.)
Deep Conditioning boosts the elasticity of their hair and adds to a bounce factor.
How Does Deep Conditioning Help Women With Relaxed Hair?
Women with chemically relaxed hair find that Deep Conditioning on a regular schedule can help to rejuvenate their hair in between relaxation treatments. (See Chapter 5 for the Deep Conditioning schedule that is just right for your hair.)
Chemical relaxing treatments can take a toll on hair health. So, Deep Conditioners help to counteract the negative effects of relaxation treatments.
How Does Deep Conditioning Help Women With Highlighted Hair?
Highlighted hair benefits from Deep Conditioning on a regular schedule because the foils and chemicals used in highlighting treatments can fry your hair. (See Chapter 5 for the Deep Conditioning schedule that is just right for your hair.)
Deep Conditioning helps to restore your hair’s health without diminishing those beautiful highlights. In fact, the conditioner can help to restore the shine and brilliance of the highlighted colors.
How Does Deep Conditioning Help Women With Naturally Textured Hair?
Women with naturally textured hair benefit from Deep Conditioning their hair each time they wash it. This is because many women with naturally textured hair tend to shampoo their hair just 2 to 3 times a month, which allows these women to better maintain their hair’s natural moisture.
This natural moisture allows the Deep Conditioning treatments to work even better. Perhaps as a result, women with naturally curly hair told us that when they started Deep Conditioning they noticed that their natural hair was smoother, stronger, shinier, and more manageable.
How Does Deep Conditioning Help Women with Over-Processed or Bleached Hair?
Over processed hair is damaged hair or hair in distress from too much use of chemical products and heat.
Over processed hair means your hair is at its weakest and is therefore, extremely fragile. At this point, heat styling should be lessened in order to prevent further weakening of your hair. Conditioning is an absolute must but you need to seek professional advice because using the wrong products can create more adverse effects on your hair.
Alissa Frum, a New York City colorist, recommends a Deep Conditioner with a protein base. Deep Conditioning helps by rebuilding the hair and binding the hair cuticles and cortex. Weekly treatment is advised.
Here are some other tips to remedy over-processed hair:
- Use products with low or no alcohol additives to reduce dryness and buildup of products in your hair.
- Avoid washing your hair on a daily basis because this strips your hair of its natural Oils.
- Seek professional advice on what products will work best for your hair type and structure.
- Give your hair a break from chemical styling and coloring.
How Does Deep Conditioning Help Women With Super Coily Hair?
Super Coily hair is totally controllable with a regularly scheduled Deep Conditioning treatment. (See Chapter 5 for the Deep Conditioning schedule that is just right for your hair.) Since each individual hair is coated with the Deep Conditioner, small coils and curls benefit from added bounce, moisture, and softness.
Does Deep Conditioning Help Women Suffering From Split Ends?
In short, yes. A Deep Conditioner does help, but not exactly as you may expect. Once your hair strand is split, the end of your hair strand is split forever. But, you can prevent further damage by using a Deep Conditioner that makes the damaged strands appear to be healed.
Overall, a good Deep Conditioner will help your split ends appear less noticeable. The only way to actually get rid of split ends is to have those ends trimmed.
How Does Deep Conditioning Help Women With Heat Damaged Hair?
Heat damaged hair absolutely benefits from regularly scheduled Deep Conditioning. (See Chapter 5 for the Deep Conditioning schedule that is just right for your hair.) Regular use of heat can take a toll on your hair over time, contributing to breakage and dryness. Deep Conditioning restores moisture and strength to brittle hair that is heat-damaged.
How Does Deep Conditioning Help Women With Color-Treated Hair?
Color-treated hair benefits from regularly scheduled Deep Conditioning because the chemicals used in many color treatments penetrate and harm the hair shaft. (See Chapter 5 for the Deep Conditioning schedule that is just right for your hair.) So, Deep Conditioning can counteract the damaging effects and changes that hair experiences from dye treatments.
How Does Deep Conditioning Help Women With Long Hair?
Women with long hair especially benefit from the maintenance that regularly scheduled Deep Conditioning provides. (See Chapter 5 for the Deep Conditioning schedule that is just right for your hair.)
The ends of long hair often become the driest or weakest, and they require the most care. Through thorough application of a Deep Conditioner, long locks can maintain their shine, strength, and overall health. In turn, this will prevent split ends in between regular trims and allow hair to continue to grow.
Click through to Chapter 5 now, and you’ll learn the key steps to Deep Condition YOUR Hair Type. These steps give you the mistake proof way to beautiful hair.
CHAPTER 5
How To Deep Condition Every Hair Type
How Long Should I Leave My Deep Conditioner On My Hair?
You should leave your Deep Conditioner on for 20 to 30 minutes. Your hair does not absorb or get additional benefits from Deep Conditioner left on for longer than about 30 minutes.
How Often Should I Deep Condition To Keep My Hair Beautiful And Healthy?
We surveyed hair experts on the question: How often should we Deep Condition our hair? Their collective answer: “It depends on your hair type and the condition of your hair.” Wait! What? So, we kept digging and… here is how often you should Deep Condition your hair:
Deep Conditioning Schedule by Hair Type
The 7 Things You MUST DO When Deep Conditioning Your Hair
Deep Conditioning Definitely DO #1
Deep Condition your hair at least once every two weeks, depending on your hair’s condition. Once a week can be even better for your hair.
Deep Conditioning Definitely DO #2
Alternate between Deep Conditioners containing different mixtures of beneficial ingredients in order to make sure your hair is receiving all the necessary nutrients.
Deep Conditioning Definitely DO #3
Blot excess water from your hair before application to prevent the Deep Conditioner from sliding off your hair.
Deep Conditioning Definitely DO #4
Wear a heat cap for quicker and more efficient absorption of the Deep Conditioner.
Deep Conditioning Definitely DO #5
Try hair steaming as it is an excellent way to boost the moisture level.
Deep Conditioning Definitely DO #6
Apply the Deep Conditioner – first – to your ends, and work the mixture down to the roots. Your ends are most in need of the Deep Conditioner.
Deep Conditioning Definitely DO #7
Use cool to cold water when rinsing the Deep Conditioner out of your hair so that you lock in the nutrients. (Rinsing with hot water will cause your hair to release the nutrients. That defeats the purpose!)
How Do I Prepare My Hair For Deep Conditioning?
To prepare your hair for Deep Conditioning, you’ll need a few supplies and to follow some key tips.
First, make sure you have your Deep Conditioner ready (fresh-made if it’s DIY, and well-stored if it’s an over-the-counter solution).
You’ll also need a source of heat to warm up your Deep Conditioner once you apply it to your tresses. Either have a hair dryer handy, a heat-trapping hair wrap, shower cap, or a warm towel.
Then, you’ll have to ensure that your hair is clean. This doesn’t mean that you have to shampoo your hair right before your begin the treatment. As long as it’s still clean from the night before (meaning no heavy hair products in your hair), then that’s acceptable, too.
You should also dampen your hair. If you’re just getting out of the shower, then simply towel-dry your hair. If your hair is totally dry to begin with, then rinse your hair (especially if your hair is loaded down with another hair product). Or, if you need a quick solution, try spritzing it with a spray water bottle.
Finally, as Ouidad curl experts suggest, use a wide-tooth comb to gently work out tangles before you apply the Deep Conditioner with your hands.
How Do I Deep Condition Natural Hair?
These are the 7 Steps To Best Deep Condition Your Natural Hair:
Step 1—Natural Hair Deep Conditioning
Shower clean or wet your hair using a spray bottle.
Step 2—Natural Hair Deep Conditioning
Drain off any excess water from your hair before applying the conditioner. Hair that is too wet will cause the Deep Conditioner to slide off, not penetrate your hair, and prevent you from getting good results.
Step 3—Natural Hair Deep Conditioning
Apply a Deep Conditioner specially designed for the condition of your hair, and spread it from tips to roots, section by section. (See Chapter 6 for the Best Conditioner for your hair type.)
Step 4—Natural Hair Deep Conditioning
Use your fingers to comb and coat the Deep Conditioner through your hair.
Step 5—Natural Hair Deep Conditioning
Cover your hair with a shower cap or thermal hair wrap.
Step 6—Natural Hair Deep Conditioning
Sit with your thermal hair wrap (or shower cap under a hair dryer set to moderate heat). The heat allows the Deep Conditioner to better penetrate your hair and to lock moisture into your hair. You can opt to use no heat, but it is beneficial at this point to help expand the hair shaft and bond the specific Deep Conditioning ingredients to the cuticle. A thermal Deep Conditioning hair wrap is best to accelerate absorption of the nutrients.
Step 7—Natural Hair Deep Conditioning
Rinse your hair using cool or cold water. Rinsing with cool to cold water will close the cuticles and keep the beneficial nutrients applied with the Deep Conditioner inside your hair. We do NOT advise using warm or hot water to rinse your hair because warm to hot water will open the cuticles and release the Deep Conditioner nutrients from your hair.

How Do I Deep Condition 4C Hair?
You have Type 4C hair if your hair is full of very tight coils, is wiry, tends to become dry, and is brittle or fragile.
If you have Type 4C hair you should strive to balance the protein and moisture level in your Deep Conditioners. A Deep Conditioner containing Egg Whites, Mayonnaise, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Avocado Oil, Olive Oil, Lemon Juice and Honey is great for Type 4C hair. (See Chapter 7 for a complete list of the Ingredients You Should Use In Your Deep Conditioner. You should also see our Deep Conditioner Recipes on Chapter 10.) To Deep Condition your Type 4C hair:
These are the 7 Steps To Best Deep Condition Your Type 4C Hair:
Step 1 – Type 4C Hair Deep Conditioning
Shower clean or wet your hair using a spray bottle.
Step 2 – Type 4C Hair Deep Conditioning
Drain off any excess water from your hair before applying the conditioner. Hair that is too wet will cause the Deep Conditioner to slide off, not penetrate your hair, and prevent you from getting good results.
Step 3 – Type 4C Hair Deep Conditioning

Step 4 – Type 4C Hair Deep Conditioning
Use your fingers to comb and coat the Deep Conditioner through your hair.
Step 5 – Type 4C Hair Deep Conditioning
Cover your hair with a shower cap or thermal hair wrap.
Step 6 – Type 4C Hair Deep Conditioning

We do NOT advise using warm or hot water to rinse your hair because warm to hot water will open the cuticles and release the Deep Conditioner nutrients from your hair.
What’s The Best Way To Deep Condition Relaxed Hair?
Relaxed hair requires regular Deep Conditioning treatments. This is because relaxation treatments are very aggressive at breaking down your hair and can damage your hair in the process of achieving the style you want. If you relax your hair, you want to use a Deep Conditioner that contains Shea Butter. Shea Butter is one of nature’s greatest moisturizers and is especially advantageous for relaxed hair because it’s rich in beneficial fatty acids that are easily absorbed into hair.
Once you’ve selected a Deep Conditioner containing Shea Butter. (See Chapter 7 for a complete list of the Ingredients You Should Use In Your Deep Conditioner. You should also see our Deep Conditioner Recipes on Chapter 10.)
Here’s a BoomZip Pro Tip: Don’t wet your hair. While most hair types require damp hair for an effective Deep Conditioning treatment, it’s best to leave the water factor out of the equation for relaxed hair. Apply the conditioner to your dry ends first, and then along the length of your hair. Then, cover your hair with a heat cap to really help the product be absorbed by your locks. Rinse your hair after about 30 minutes.
Here are the 7 Steps To Best Deep Condition Your Relaxed Hair:
Step 1 – Relaxed Hair Deep Conditioning
Shower clean or wet your hair using a spray bottle.
Step 2 – Relaxed Hair Deep Conditioning

How Do I Deep Condition My Damaged Hair?
So, your hair is really jacked up? It doesn’t look good. It doesn’t feel good. And, you don’t feel good about it. Let’s get you taken care of.
To Deep Condition your Damaged hair, begin with clean hair. It’s acceptable if you didn’t wash your hair the same day. But your hair should be clean.
Next, dampen your hair. Either gently wet your hair with a spray bottle, or lightly towel-dry your locks following a shampoo session.
Next, we suggest you use a Deep Conditioner that contains Avocado and Olive Oil. Avocados are rich in vitamins A, B, D, and E, essential to hair health. When combined with Olive Oil, you can restore the health to your hair that chemicals, heat, and other elements have wiped away. (See Chapter 7 for a complete list of the Ingredients You Should Use In Your Deep Conditioner. You should also see our Deep Conditioner Recipes on Chapter 10.)
Then, apply the Deep Conditioner to your ends, thoroughly coating them. Work you way down the length of your hair, and stop right before you reach your scalp. Cover your locks with a towel or shower cap to protect the conditioning treatment.
After 20 to 30 minutes, gently rinse out the conditioner with cool to cold water.
Here are the 7 Steps To Best Deep Condition Your Damaged Hair:
Step 1 – Damaged Hair Deep Conditioning
Shower clean or wet your hair using a spray bottle.
Step 2 – Damaged Hair Deep Conditioning
Drain off any excess water from your hair before applying the conditioner. Hair that is too wet will cause the Deep Conditioner to slide off, not penetrate, and prevent you from getting maximum results.
Step 3 – Damaged Hair Deep Conditioning

Step 4 – Damaged Hair Deep Conditioning
Use your fingers to comb and coat the Deep Conditioner through your hair.
Step 5 – Damaged Hair Deep Conditioning
Cover your hair with a shower cap or thermal hair wrap.
Step 6 – Damaged Hair Deep Conditioning
Sit with your thermal hair wrap (or shower cap under a hair dryer set to moderate heat). The heat allows the Deep Conditioner to better penetrate your hair and to lock moisture into your hair.
You can opt to use no heat, but it is beneficial at this point to help expand the hair shaft and bond the specific Deep Conditioning ingredients to the cuticle.
A thermal Deep Conditioning hair wrap is best to accelerate absorption of the nutrients.
Step 7 – Damaged Hair Deep Conditioning
Rinse your hair using cool or cold water. Rinsing with cool to cold water will close the cuticles and keep the beneficial nutrients applied with the Deep Conditioner inside your hair. We do NOT advise using warm or hot water to rinse your hair because warm to hot water will open the cuticles and release the Deep Conditioner nutrients from your hair.
Should I Wash My Hair Before Deep Conditioning?
You should wash your hair before Deep Conditioning, though it is not required. However, you certainly don’t want to shampoo your hair after the treatment. So, if your locks need a scrub, wash your hair before using a Deep Conditioner. Then, apply the Deep Conditioner to your wet or damp hair.
Should I Use Cold, Warm, Cool, Or Hot Water To Deep Condition My Hair?
When you Deep Condition your hair, you’ll want to use cool water for dampening your hair pre-Deep Conditioning, and cool to cold water for rinsing your hair post-Deep Conditioning. The use of hot water may affect the hair cuticle, expose your hair to damage, and diminish the benefits of the Deep Conditioning treatment.
After applying your Deep Conditioner and while actually “doing” the Deep Conditioning treatment, it’s best to involve a bit of heat. Trap the Deep Conditioner’s beneficial impact on your hair by using a hair therapy heat wrap or thermal shower cap.
According to Thermal Hair Care experts, the heat will allow the Deep Conditioner to penetrate deeper into your hair shafts because the warmth causes your hair’s cuticles to open. Then, rinsing your locks off with cool to cold water will seal the cuticle closed again and hold in the benefits of the Deep Conditioning treatment.
Should I Use a Warming Wrap with My Deep Conditioner?
Yes! We’ve found that using a hair therapy wrap is a sure way to achieve your desired results. The heat is gentle which allows for penetration of the Deep Conditioner right down to the hair follicles. One of the perks of using one is that it doesn’t disrupt you in any way from your typical day to day activities. You can wear it in the bathroom, while sleeping, relaxing or even during cleaning around the house.
With a hair therapy wrap, you are looking at deeply nourished hair, improved hair texture, and softer hair which will definitely make it easier for you to manage your hair.
CONGRATULATIONS!

If you have fine hair, then you’ll need a Deep Conditioner that’s specially tailored to you. Fine hair can be easily damaged and weighed down by the buildup of harsh chemicals in hair products. Often, fine hair tends to be dry and brittle, flat or frizzy.
So, what to do? Treat your fine hair with Deep Conditioners that nourish your hair with natural proteins, strengtheners, and other ingredients, and no – or low levels of – sulfates, silicone, and other chemicals. This will help to maintain your hair. Look for natural Oils like Avocado or Coconut, which will moisturize your locks and prevent future breakage.
What Type of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Have Coarse Hair?
Coarse hair is very prone to drying out which causes it to be brittle. Restoring its moisture would need the help of rich creams, e.g., Shea Butter or Oils such as Sunflower, Avocado, or Olive Oil. These will resuscitate your hair, reduce breakage, and promote good hair health and appearance.
What Type Of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Have Curly Hair?
Luckily, the best DIY Deep Conditioner for curly hair is super simple: cocoa butter. That’s it! Just one ingredient. You’ll want to melt the cocoa butter by slightly warming it before applying to your locks. Then, you can add equal parts cocoa butter to your favorite natural conditioner. Allow the two products to team up.
The cocoa butter will give your hair a rich aroma, and moisturize and treat your curls to keep their shape in tact. With the help of a natural conditioner product, the entire solution will coat and cling to your hair for the 20 to 30 minutes that you let it soak in.
What Type Of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Have Dry, Brittle Hair?
When it comes to dry, brittle hair, the best Deep Conditioner product should contain Argan Oil. Sometimes, this Oil is called Moroccan Oil. But, at the end of the day, it’s exactly the same thing.
Argan Oil is so great for dry or brittle hair because it offers intense moisture, without the greasy factor. This natural Oil will penetrate each individual hair shaft. With regular use, you’ll find that your hair feels softer. But here’s a BoomZip Pro Tip: avoid overpriced Moroccan Oil products that you might see at a salon. You can get the same benefits from over-the-counter Argan Oil hair masks and Deep Conditioner kits, which are much more affordable.
Mark Garrison, a top hair stylist and founder at Mark Garrison Salon, says that Deep Conditioning can bring your dry & brittle hair “back to life.”
Mark also advises that there are occasions when really thick or coarse hair would benefit from being Deep Conditioned two to three times each week.
What Type Of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Have Damaged Hair?
If you have particularly damaged hair, then it’s time for an amazingly powerful DIY Deep Conditioner. This one’s simple: Coconut Oil and Honey. Of course, you’ll need the Coconut Oil to be in liquid form. So, if you live in a cool climate and your supply has solidified, simply warm it under low heat until it melts. To make the Deep Conditioner, check out the BoomZip Deep Conditioner Recipe Book.
According to Women’s Health, this mixture is great for damaged hair because Coconut Oil and Honey are so nutrient-rich. Both ingredients protect hair from the elements while boosting the overall health of your hair. What’s more, they add sweet-smelling moisture. Additionally, Honey can strengthen hair follicles and stimulate new growth. And, both of these natural ingredients contribute to a healthy shine.
What Type Of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Have Limp, Lifeless Hair?
For limp, lifeless hair, try a Deep Conditioner that contains grape seed Oil. Limp hair is often a bit on the fine side. Luckily, grape seed Oil is incredibly lightweight. In fact, it’s lighter than Coconut Oil or Olive Oil. So, the grape seed Oil will coat your locks and add life and shine to your hair—without the greasy or heavy effect. This Oil will help your hair maintain lush moisture for a more vibrant and healthier look.
What Type of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Have Relaxed Hair?
Hair that is relaxed through the use of chemical products is prone to become dry, fragile, and frizzy. Hair breakage is accelerated by repeated hair relaxing without proper care. Deep Conditioners specially designed for relaxed hair will help to prevent damage and keep your hair & scalp as healthy as can be. Go to Chapter 10 to see the recipe for the absolutely, no-doubt-about-it, 100% best deep conditioner for relaxed hair.
BoomZip’s Super-And-No-Longer-Secret Best Deep Conditioner for Relaxed Hair
After lots of trial and error and consultation with some of the best hair experts on the planet, BoomZip has developed the Best Deep Conditioner for Relaxed Hair. Here it is: Mix up a Deep Conditioner with a roughly equal mixture of Shea Butter, Avocado Oil, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Argan Oil, Aloe Vera, and Sunflower Oil. This superb Deep Conditioner will give you mega-moisturizing, restored hair strength, greater elasticity, better manageability, less breakage, and brilliant shine. (See BoomZip’s Deep Conditioner Recipe Book for step-by-step homemade details.)
What Type Of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Have Highlighted Hair?
If you have highlighted hair, then go for a Deep Conditioner that will maintain that gorgeous color and reverse damage. First off, make sure that your Deep Conditioner is sulfate-free. Then, check that it contains vitamin F (also known as fatty acids).
Vitamin F will help restore the health and strength of your hair, which is knowingly damaged from the highlights. And, according to Dermascope Magazine, these essential fatty acids will regenerate your hair.
What Type Of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Have Over-Processed or Bleached Hair?
For over-processed hair, track down a Deep Conditioner that’s stock-full of vitamins. Hair growth and maintenance—just like every other part of the body—requires a healthy diet for successful results. Sometimes, we need to boost our diet with vitamins. And this is the same when it comes to Deep Conditioners. In particular, make sure that your Deep Conditioner contains vitamin A and vitamin E.
Over-processed hair is weak, brittle, and tired. Too many stylings strip your hair of its moisture. So, for a serious restorative treatment, you’ll need vitamin A to restore that glossy affect and strengthen your weakened hair. Then, you’ll need vitamin E to fight off free radicals and offer long-term protection so that your hair has a chance to heal.
See Chapter 7 (Magical Deep Conditioning Oils) and Chapter 10 (Deep Conditioner Recipes)for the best Deep Conditioners and ingredients for Over-Processed or Bleached Hair.
What Type Of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Suffer From Hair Loss?
If you suffer from hair loss, don’t worry. There is a perfect Deep Conditioner out there for you. A Deep Conditioner for hair loss should contain biotin. After all, biotin is an essential component when it comes to healthy hair and nail growth. So, boost your hair’s growth with a biotin-infused Deep Conditioner. Additionally, look for a Deep Conditioner that contains collagen.
BoomZip Pro Tip: Collagen – a naturally occurring protein – is essential for maintaining your hair’s elasticity & strength so that you can grow a thicker and fuller head of hair. Your body’s production of collagen declines as you age. This makes your hair more vulnerable to breakage and loss.
What Type Of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Suffer From Split Ends?
If you have a few split ends, it’s usually no big deal—you’re just overdo for a trim. But what do you do if your split ends are everywhere, and threatening to creep up the full length of your hair? This is where a restorative Deep Conditioner comes to the rescue.
And that Deep Conditioner should include a number of natural Oils. Any combination of Almond, Avocado, Coconut, or Argan Oil will do. Experts also suggest your Deep Conditioner contain Aloe Vera. Together, each of these natural remedies can repair and heal hair that has become dry and split. These Oils will also help prevent further splitting of your individual hairs.
See Chapter 7 (Magical Deep Conditioning Oils) and Chapter 10 (Deep Conditioner Recipes) for the best Deep Conditioners and ingredients for treating split-ends.
What Type Of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Have Heat Damaged Hair?
If you have heat-damaged hair, you’re not alone. Anyone that routinely uses a hair dryer knows the problem. As you continue to use a dryer on low heat (or a cool setting, preferably), integrate a natural Deep Conditioner into your routine. We suggest you try a Deep Conditioner containing Avocado and Olive Oil.
Avocados are rich in a number of vitamins that are essential to hair health. Think: Vitamins A, B, D, and E, for starters. When combined with Olive Oil, you can restore the healthy shine to your hair that the heat had once wiped away.
What Type Of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Have Color-Treated Hair?
The good news is that you should not have to do much research to find a great Deep Conditioner for color treated hair. This means that there are tons of products out there specifically designed for color-treated hair.
When shopping for Deep Conditioners for your color-treated hair, look for these ingredients:
- Olive Oil
- Almond Oil
- Coconut Oil
- Avocado Oil
Or, you can make your own! Check out BoomZip.com’s Homemade Deep Conditioner Recipe Book in Chapter 10.
What Type Of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Have Long Hair?
To treat long hair, you’ll need to really focus on your ends with a heavier Deep Conditioner that doesn’t contain protein. Sure, protein is essential to healthy hair growth. So it should go without saying that protein should be a part of your diet. But when it comes to Deep Conditioning, protein can weigh down and dry out your hair. Maintain your long hair’s bounce and softness with an Oil-based Deep Conditioner. Choose natural Oils such as Avocado, Coconut, Almond, or Jojoba.
What Type of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Have Naturally Textured Hair?
Naturally textured hair is prone to dryness and becoming brittle. As such, specialized care is advised. Stylist Mark Garrison recommends Avocado or Coconut Oil, both of which work to restore moisture, strengthen, and maintain your hair’s elasticity. Other products, such as Olive Oil, Mayonnaise, Eggs, Honey, and Yogurt are useful for promoting healthy hair. Stay away from Deep Conditioners that contain alcohol, Mineral Oil, Petroleum Oil, artificial colors, paraben, or any fragrances.
What Type Of Deep Conditioner Do I Need If I Have Super Coily Hair?
Super Coily hair deserves a healthy Deep Conditioning treatment that maintains shape and prevents frizz. Two words: Coconut Cream. Thicker and meatier than Coconut Oil, Coconut Cream offers moisture, maintenance, and creaminess that holds tight curls together. Coconut Cream is soft to the touch and does wonders for coily hair when it comes to preventing and controlling frizz.
Can I Really Deep Condition My Hair With Food From My Grocery Store?
Yes. One of the best ways to take care of your hair in-between professional Deep Conditioning treatments is to make your own Deep Conditioners at home. You might already have some of the necessary ingredients in your home, which only makes this a more convenient option.
Your Deep Conditioner can be created by combining a mixture of ingredients based on your hair’s specific needs. Some common ingredients used in homemade Deep Conditioners include:
- Bananas
- Extra-Virgin Olive Oil
- Greek Yogurt
- Honey
- Coconut Oil
- Egg Yolks
BoomZip Pro Tip: Janice Cox, author of Natural Beauty at Home, says that Egg Yolk, which is rich in fats and proteins, is naturally moisturizing, while the Egg White, which contains bacteria-eating enzymes, removes unwanted oils. She goes on to say…
For normal hair, use the entire Egg to condition hair; use Egg Whites only to treat oily hair; use Egg Yolks only to moisturize dry, brittle hair. Use 1/2 Cup of whichever Egg mixture is appropriate for you and apply to clean, damp hair. If there isn’t enough Egg to coat scalp and hair, use more as needed. Leave on for 20 minutes, rinse with cool water (to prevent Egg from “cooking”) and shampoo hair. Whole Egg and Yolks-only treatments can be applied once a month; Egg Whites-only treatment can be applied every two weeks.
All you need to do is combine your preferred ingredients. (Read Chapter 7 in BoomZip’s Ultimate Guide to Deep Conditioning Your Hair: How To Strengthen, Moisturize, Prevent Split Ends, Add Body, Improve Elasticity, Eliminate Frizz, Make Healthier, Add Shine, Improve Manageability, Repair Damage, And Have Your Best Hair Days Ever! to see the benefits delivered by the various ingredients.)
Does An Inexpensive Deep Conditioner Work As Well As An Expensive Deep Conditioner?
There are many Deep Conditioners on the market. The price charged is little indication of the quality or effectiveness of a Deep Conditioner. What matters more is the list of ingredients that will determine how well the Deep Conditioner works on your hair.
Or, you could always make a home remedy version for the lowest cost product. Read Chapter 10 – BoomZip.com’s Homemade Deep Conditioner Recipe Book to see suggested ingredients and how to make your own Deep Conditioner.
In the next chapter, you’ll learn all about the magical oils and ingredients to be used in Deep Conditioners that can take hair from ratchet to fabulous!

You already know that Argan Oil does wonders for hair health. And, while it’s included in many hair products on the market, you can use it alone in its pure form, too. What’s also great about Argan Oil is that you can Deep Condition with it more frequently than you would with other Deep Conditioners.
To Deep Condition with Argan Oil, simply coat your entire head of hair with the natural product, from the ends up to the roots. Just pour a bit of the Oil into your hands and work it through with your fingers. Then, use a wide-tooth comb to make sure that it is thoroughly coating all of your hair.
Once it’s evenly coated, use a hair therapy heat wrap, or a warm towel, or cover with a shower cap. Let it soak in for between 20 and 30 minutes. Then, rinse it out with cool to cold water.
You may need to remove the Oil residue with a very gentle baby shampoo. Avoid rinsing your hair with hot water, because this will diminish the moisturizing effects that Argan Oil offers.
How Do I Deep Condition My Hair With Coconut Oil?
A great Deep Conditioning treatment does not need to be a professional one. For those times you need a Deep Conditioning treatment in-between a professional one, you have a couple options to choose from.
One of those options is to purchase a Deep Conditioning treatment from a beauty supply store. The other option is to create a Deep Conditioning hair treatment using hydrating ingredients you have at home. See our Deep Conditioning Recipes in Chapter 10.

CHAPTER 8
Biggest Deep Conditioning Mistakes
The 10 Things You Must NOT Do When Deep Conditioning Your Hair
When you Deep Condition your hair, there are ten things that you certainly do NOT want to do. Pay attention to this list so you don’t jack-up your look:
1. Don’t wait more than 30 minutes before washing out the Deep Conditioner. You won’t want to overdo it. Plus, there’re no benefits to leaving Deep Conditioner on for longer than 30 minutes because your hair won’t absorb the nutrients after more than 30 minutes.
2. Avoid purchasing expensive products. Instead, choose a Deep Conditioner based on the ingredients that meet your hair’s needs.
3. Don’t deep-condition cold hair. Use a special Deep Conditioner hair wrap or a hair dryer on low power to warm your deep-conditioned hair so that the product can sink in.
4. Try not to overheat your Deep Conditioner. There’s no reason to fry your wet locks.
5. Don’t forget about the ends of your hair. You’ll want to focus your attention on these older, dryer parts.
6. Don’t save Deep Conditioning for special occasions; a single treatment won’t change much about your locks. Instead, get into a regular routine for long-lasting hair health. See Chapter 5 for our suggestions on the proper scheduling of Deep Conditioning for your hair type and condition.
7. When you create a homemade Deep Conditioner, don’t store it for too long. Ideally, you’ll want to use it right away so that it doesn’t have time to develop bacteria. See Chapter 10 for BoomZip.com’s Homemade Deep Conditioner Recipe Book.
8. Don’t use the same Deep Conditioner time after time. Why? Well, hair can become immune to the same Deep Conditioner after a long stretch of repeated use. So, it’s important to mix up your product lines and DIY conditioner recipes.
9. Do not start applying your Deep Conditioner at your roots. Your roots are usually the Oiliest part of your hair. So, they need the least amount of Deep Conditioning treatment. Instead, begin at the ends of your hair and work your way down to your roots.
10. Don’t use a Deep Conditioner immediately after a color treatment or dye job. This can interfere with the effects of dyes or highlights, which are still settling into your hair.
Do I Leave Deep Conditioner On My Hair Overnight?
Whatever you do, Do. Not. Leave a Deep Conditioner on overnight. Your hair needs to breathe. You don’t want to overdo a treatment. Leave the Deep Conditioner on your hair for 20-30 minutes. Then, rinse out the Deep Conditioner with cool to cold water. Anything longer could have reverse effects and even cause hair dryness and breakage, rather than offer repair.
You Know You’re Deep Conditioning Your Hair The Wrong Way If…
Everyone’s hair and scalp are different. So, one set of guidelines may not work for everyone. As you begin your Deep Conditioning treatment routine and get to know your hair’s needs better, you should keep an eye out for a few red flags. You know you’re Deep Conditioning your hair the wrong way if…
- The conditioner doesn’t rinse out. You shouldn’t need to shampoo your hair to fully wash out the conditioner. This will only undo the restorative treatment. So, if the conditioner is too clingy, chances are, it’s too thick for your locks. This is a common issue for people with fine hair.
- Your hair feels brittle after Deep Conditioning. If you didn’t have brittle hair before the Deep Conditioning treatment, then chances are, your product contains too much protein. Follow up with a gentle leave-in conditioner to reverse these effects.
- Your roots feel greasy. Did you start with clean hair? If not, then a Deep Conditioner won’t wipe away grease.
- The color looks dull. The proper Deep Conditioner for color-treated hair should maintain your hair’s strength and color. Your hair should have an added shine, not dullness. If you find that your hair looks dull after a Deep Conditioning treatment, then it’s time to try a different Deep Conditioner (See Chapter 6) that is specially designed for highlighted or color-treated hair.
THAT’S (ALMOST) IT!
You now know the most common mistakes made while Deep Conditioning.
Next, we compare Deep Conditioners to Regular Conditioners to Leave-In Conditioners so you can know what to use and when. You’ll definitely want to check out Chapter 9.
CHAPTER 9
Deep Conditioners vs.
Regular Conditioners vs.
Leave-In Conditioners
Is A Deep Conditioner Better Than A Regular Hair Conditioner? How? Why?
A Deep Conditioning treatment is similar to a regular hair conditioner. The main difference is the higher levels of beneficial nutrients you get with a Deep Conditioning treatment. Regular hair conditioners only treat the surface of your hair.
A regular hair conditioner will not seep deep into your hair. Rather, it will leave a coating of emollients, humectants, and silicones that may assist with your hair’s manageability.
Deep Conditioners hydrate by using a concentration of nutrients, especially penetrating Oils, to get deep into your hair strands. Deep Conditioning lasts longer and does more, than regular conditioners.
Is A Deep Conditioner Better Than A Leave-In Conditioner? How? Why?
A Deep Conditioner is very different from a leave-in conditioner. However, neither one is better than the other. They both have their purpose. Deep Conditioning is a typically twice-monthly routine hair care treatment that helps to restore your hair’s health and beauty.
A Deep Conditioner can be used in combination with a leave-in conditioner. A leave-in conditioner will typically be lighter than a Deep Conditioner because it is for everyday use. For instance, you could apply a leave-in conditioner after rinsing off the Deep Conditioner in order to better style your hair, post-treatment.
As you can see, all conditioners are not the same. You are so knowledgeable that you can make your own Deep Conditioner. One that is 100% tailored for what your hair needs.
